EAR TRAINING - AURAL TESTS - AURAL EXERCISES - MUSIC TESTS

An inversion is simply changing the order of notes in a chord. There are three different inversions for triads. If we take a major triad:

Root position = Root, 3rd, 5th (Root of the chord is at the bottom)
1st Inversion = 3rd, 5th, Root (Root of the chord is at the top)
2nd Inversion = 5th, Root, 3rd (Root of the chord is in the middle)

Below you will find links to over 40 different ear training inversion tests.

Each of these tests contains 10 questions and at the end of each test you will be given a mark and a percentage. Feel free to repeat each of the ear training tests as many times as you wish.

In this beginner section, you will be tested on only the three inversions of a major triad. The questions are selected at random and can be in any key.

hint:

To distinguish between the inversions you can also use the following ear training method:

Sing the three notes of the chord as they are played, then sing them again in reverse. As you sing them in reverse, keep going down the arpeggio until you sing the root of the chord. If the root is the third note you sing then the inversion is root position. If the root is the fourth note you sing then the chord is 1st Inversion. If the root is the 5th note you sing then the chord is 2nd Inversion.

Use the following songs and notes to help you recognise the inversion:
